Sacred Waters offers complete family-centered prenatal, birth and postpartum care in a licensed waterbirth center in Eugene, Oregon. Women give birth in a comfortable home-like setting with the caring and personal assistance of licensed professional midwives.

Midwife-assisted homebirth is also available in Eugene, Springfield, Cottage Grove, Corvallis, Florence and surrounding areas. Waterbirth is our specialty.

At Sacred Waters we are more than a Birth Center, we are a community offering an array of services from childbirth education courses, workshops and a community meeting room.

midwifery care At Sacred Waters, we feel it is necessary educate women and families about pregnancy and childbirth, empowering them to make the decisions that are right for their birth. We work on an informed consent basis, teaching women and families of the many options available during pregnancy and childbirth. We take our time with each woman, offering holistic care and ongoing support.Prenatal Care ~ All women preparing for birth and motherhood deserve excellent holistic prenatal care. With each prenatal visit, you will learn more about the changes your body will be going through as your pregnancy advances. At every visit, we will talk with you about your overall health and wellbeing. We also discuss your current stage of pregnancy and how your baby is developing and growing, and check in with you about what you are feeling and experiencing. There will be time for discussion, education, and guidance so that you will address any of your concerns pertaining to your pregnancy, labor, birth and early parenting.As a general guide, prenatal visits are scheduled every four weeks from the time of your first visit to 28 weeks, every two weeks from 28 to 36 weeks, every week after 36 weeks.As a licensed birthing center, we provide complete prenatal care here at the birthing center and also well womens care services. This includes screening, diagnostic, laboratory tests, pap smears and routine blood work. Each prenatal visit will last approximately one hour. We will come to your home to do a visit between 36-38 weeks if you are planning a homebirth. We will inform you of any childbirth or educational classes that are available here at the birthing center or within the greater community.Laboratory Testing Available ~ We offer and recommend the following laboratory tests during your early pregnancy: Complete Pregnancy Panel which includes; Complete Blood Count (CBC), Blood Type and Rh Factor, Antibody Screen, RPR (VDRL) test (for syphilis), Hepatitis B screen, Rubella (German Measles) screen, and a random glucose, we can add additional testing such as HIV if desired. We will supply you with information to make informed decisions about all testing available. We also offer the option of Genetic screening tests such as the Quad Marker, which is done around 16 weeks gestation.Other tests, such as glucose tolerance testing, vaginal cultures, sexually transmitted infection test, PAP smears and urinalysis can be ordered as needed. We use Legacy Laboratory the majority of the time, however we also use Oregon Medical Laboratory for specific tests. Ultrasound imaging is also optional and is typically done at Oregon Imaging. Most insurance companies cover a portion of your lab and ultrasound. We recommend that you check with your insurance company regarding the percentage of coverage for these services.Post-partum Care ~ You and your new baby will receive care from your midwives up to six weeks post-partum. The midwives will provide information about pediatricians and other providers in our community for continuing care.Through both gentle physical exams and spending the extra time educating women, we hope to give women a sense of control over their bodies by encouraging them to take part in the role they can take to promote their own health and well-being.Midwives Model of CareThe Midwives Model of Care is based on the premise that pregnancy and birth are normal life processes. The Midwives Model of Care includesMonitoring the physical, psychological, and social well-being of the mother throughout the childbearing cycle; Providing the mother with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support; Minimizing technological interventions; Identifying and referring women who require obstetrical attention.The application of this woman-centered model of care has been proven to reduce the incidence of birth injury, trauma, and cesarean section.~ Midwifery Task Force

Water Birth Sacred Water Births To birth naturally in water is a tranquil experience for the mother, newborn and partner. A way of birthing that promotes relaxation and comfort. Waterbirths give the mother greater mobility, which encourages widening of the pelvis and helps with the decent of the baby. A potential benefit of a Waterbirth is decreased pain during labor; with relaxation, less adrenalin is produced, while beta-endorphin and oxytocin are increased. We at Sacred Waters believe that having a Waterbirth as a birth choice allows the newborn a gentle transition into the worldSacred Home BirthsAs midwives we trust in the nature of birth. We believe that families will birth best in the place they feel most comfortable and safe. For many families this place is home. Erin Lusk, CPM, LDM

Erin was born and raised on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, surrounded by family and nature. It was there that her deep love for family, community, and the natural world was cultivated, laying ground for a lifelong passion for health and all things life-giving. Erin first came to midwifery in 2002, through a holistic doula training at the House of La Matrona. The ancient art of midwifery instantly clicked with all that she knew to be true and good, and eventually led her to Maternidad La Luz, a midwifery school and busy birth center on the Mexico/U.S. border. She has a B. A. in Environmental Studies from Prescott College and is a graduate of Maternidad La Luz. She was delighted to join Sacred Waters in 2009 and is an Oregon licensed Certified Professional Midwife. When not catching babies, Erin enjoys rural life, working in (and eating from) her garden, and sailing.

I grew up in the Mountains of Mexico until the age of 17. I remember my great-grandmothers who were the midwives in the nearby village. I hold precious memories of Great-Grandmother Toribia. She would ride by horse to the births, carrying burlap sacks with orderly bundles of herbs, and tincture bottles.miss the Yerba Anis smells she burned for the herbal hot baths she gave the women after birth. Later in life, the spark of the Midwife within me was awakened by the Spirit of my own Homebirth. It was then I began studying and attending homebirths in 1985, and obtained a Midwifery License from the State Of Oregon in 1993. With the love and support of other midwives and a lot of volunteers precious time, our fully Licensed Sacred Waters Birthing Center was born in 2005 here in Eugene. My intent and dedication is to provide individualized care in a holistic approach for mothers, babies and their families, in a safe, calm place such as at home, or in a home-like setting. Why Lay Midwifery? Since the beginning of time there are midwives, and more and more women again, are seeking natural birth. Women and their families, who believe birth is normal, a Beautiful Sacred Intimate Experience. These women and their families are committed to health and growing healthy babies. In the absence of fear, and a peaceful surrounding, innately she knows she can birth just fine. Accompanied by an experienced midwife who will quietly monitor the baby as well as care for the mother, as little or as much as the individual woman needs require. Dim lights, hot tub, soft voices, and minimal intervention, surrounded by loved ones are exactly what some of these families are looking for. Some women believe birthing their own babies is their birth right, and a necessity for their emotional well being, as well an intricate part of ones personal evolution. I cannot imagine anything more Real, Beautiful, Powerful and Magical than a woman birthing un-interrupted in her own splendor. This is why I am here.

Teresa E. Sewalelot, Marketing Director & Student Midwife

Teresa has a strong background in Eastern Medicine and Womens Wellness which led her into the life of midwifery with Anita Rojas in 2009. She is currently a student at Sacred Waters working towards her CNM. (Certified Nurse Midwife). Besides her holistic background, Teresa has a Bachelors of Science in Advertising and Design and is the Marketing Director at the community birth center. She is married to her beloved husband Matteo and they have two young son's; Soren Jai and Ayden Skye.Teresa has spent the last ten years living between SE Asia and America working in humanitarian, environmental and womens rights foundations. She is an advocate of natural birth and health care globally. Birth is a sacred thing, and she is grateful to be witness. Lisa Loos, Student Midwife

Lisa is an Oregon native who was born and has spent most of her life in Southern Oregon. Her interest in birth and babies began when she was young, but it wasn't until later that she realized how strong the pull for working with women and families would be. Lisa has three children of her own and it would eventually be the birth experience of her last born that would move her to pursue the path to midwifery.Lisa began training through DONA as a birth doula in 2006. One year later she attended her first homebirth and truly saw the power and beauty of un-hindered, un-interfered with, raw and natural birth. She knew that she had to be a part of this and provide other women with the option to have that same powerful experience. In furthering her education, Lisa has completed an AA degree focusing on the human body and began studying with Ancient Arts Midwifery Institute in 2009. She has included clinical training through intensive sessions at Better Birth, a high volume birth center in Utah, and feels forever blessed to learn from and be a part of Sacred Waters.When not studying or working with women and babies, Lisa enjoys spending time with her own family, fishing, and hiking, anything outdoors and has a strong passion for photography.

Shawna Kelly-Wickersheim, Student Midwife

I am the mother of 9 children; 6 biological and 3 adopted, and I have also been a foster parent for the state of Oregon for the past 6 years. My adopted children are a beautiful sibling group from our foster care. With my biological children I have experienced both hospital and home births, including twins born prematurely and a surprise breech homebirth. I know well the process and power of birth and believe that childbirth reveals the beauty and strength of women, and that the way we bring forth our children matters. When I was 12 years old, I read Suzanne Arms’ book Immaculate Deception and Ina May Gaskin’s book Spiritual Midwifery, and I knew then that I’d be a midwife. I have been involved with birth and childbirth education since 1989 when I became certified as a childbirth educator and a childbirth assistant (now called doulas). Over the past 23 years, as I have been busy birthing and raising my own children, I have continued to study midwifery, spending three months at the Austin Area Birth Center in Texas at one point, and working occasionally with another Oregon midwife. In the early 1990s, I spent several years living in a rural part of Eastern Oregon where maternity services did not exist. I became a community-called midwife as several women who wanted homebirths called on me to help them. Finally, in 2008 I enrolled in Aviva Institute and am soon to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Midwifery. I am excited to serve and learn at Sacred Waters Birth Center as I continue working towards my midwifery goals.My other interests include reading, gardening, natural living, traditional cooking, and chickens. I have started experimenting with making my own herbal remedies and I hope someday to learn how to knit socks.

I believe that childbirth is a miracle that was intended to be a natural and safe event in a woman's life. I started my midwifery journey at the age of 17 when I became a certified birth Doula and volunteered to help some pregnant teens at my local high school in Central Oregon. After graduating from high school I immediately enrolled in midwifery school through Mercy In Action located in Boise Idaho, dual enrolling in the National College of Midwifery where I am currently obtaining a degree in midwifery. Through Mercy In Action, I spent 5 months interning at a busy birth center in the Philippines, serving among the poorest of the poor, and have also been privileged to work with a midwife in Eastern Oregon with whom I have been able to attend several twin and breech births. I am very excited to be joining Sacred Waters with Anita Rojas to continue my journey. If we are to heal the planet, we must begin by healing birthing. ~Agnes Sallet Von Tannenberg
